A late-summer highlight reel for our guests — one day, from first light to a table you built yourself.
From Mountain to Table: An Adventure in Three Acts.
This is an invitation to experience Telluride differently. Follow a journey that begins with the quiet awe of sunrise, rises to the thrill of a high-country forage, and culminates in the satisfaction of a feast harvested by you.
In August, the sun rises at a low, magical angle, casting long rays that spill down into the valley. It's quiet, powerful, and one of the most beautiful natural moments Telluride offers all year.
Where
Telluride Airport Overlook
Park at the large pull-off on the east end of the runway, about a quarter-mile before the airport entrance.
Gear up for the ascent
The mountain rewards the prepared. Pack light, pack smart, and you'll be ready for both the hike and the harvest.
Essentials
Plenty of water, extra layers (always), a rain jacket, and a headlamp.
Footwear
Sturdy running shoes or hiking boots. Leave the flip-flops and Chacos at home for this one.
Foraging kit
A small container, a few paper lunch bags, and a couple of sharp knives.
ACT TWO
ASCENT
The hunt for nature's tiniest treasure
"Tiny, intensely sweet, and unforgettable."
Wild strawberries hide in scattered patches along the high forest road. They're a fraction of the size you know — and worth every step of the search.
Where
1
Ride the free gondola up to Station San Sophia.
2
Hike the forest road toward the top of Lift 4, continuing to the bottom of Lift 6.
3
Where the road steepens, look just off the trail for scattered patches of wild strawberries.
4
Continue uphill toward Lift 5.
Arrive at Bon Vivant, a forager's paradise
At the top of Lift 5 you'll find Bon Vivant's stunning terrace. The slope just below is one of the best foraging zones for wild mushrooms in the range.
YOUR TARGETS
Hawk's Wing
Porcini
Golden Chanterelles
The forager's code: preserve what you find
A few simple habits keep this place giving, season after season. Cutting at the base preserves the delicate mycelium, letting these fungi regenerate and thrive for years to come.
Know before you eat. Only cook with mushrooms you can identify with complete certainty — and when there's any doubt at all, leave it where it grew. New to foraging? Ask us and we'll point you toward a trusted local guide.
1
Separate
Keep each variety in its own paper bag so nothing bruises or mingles.
2
Cut, don't pull
Always cut mushrooms at the base — never pull them from the ground.
